The legendary cinema building in the very heart of Tallinn centre has opened its doors again after substantial renovation to once more become the most advanced IMAX cinema in the Baltic states.
Built over half a century ago and fully refurbished last year, it has once again become the most modern cinema in Estonia with the most sophisticated technology. Kosmos is not only a monument of its era but also one of the architectural symbols of 1960s.
When the cinema was opened in 1964, it could accommodate 1015 viewers, and the area of the screen reached 240 square meters. It was the largest and the most advanced screening hall in the Baltics of the period, and Tallinn residents took pride in it. In 1997 the Kosmos cinema was entered in the register of protected landmarked buildings.
In December 2014, the Kosmos cinema reclaimed its title of the most advanced screening hall in the Baltic States. During the renovation for the construction of the new screen with the area of 300 square meters, the building was extended by one storey into the ground. Nowadays Kosmos IMAX has three screening halls. The largest, accommodating 322 viewers, is called IMAX after the technology in use. Apart from the IMAX hall, there are two smaller screening halls – LEM and KUBRICK , with 49 seats each. Regular 2D and 3D movies are shown in the smaller halls.
The main advantage of the renovated and refashioned Kosmos IMAX opened December 2014 lies in the use of the advanced Image MAXimum technology, which provides the effect of the viewer’s full participation in the action on the screen. The concave screen literally occupies the whole wall from floor to ceiling, from one corner of the hall to the other, which creates immersion experience regardless of where the viewer is sitting.
We can be proud of the most innovative screening hall in the Baltic region!
